    江戸時代の人気浮世絵絵師国芳による作品。

    病床にある源頼光とその四天王たちが囲碁をする様子、背後に化けて出る土蜘蛛と様々な妖怪が徒党を組んで争う様子が描かれています。

    本作は表向きは源頼光による土蜘蛛退治の物語を下敷きにしていますが、実は水野忠邦の天保の改革の風刺画であり、背後の妖怪は政策に苦しむ民衆たちであるという解釈が一般的です。

    源頼光の目の前にいる四天王の装束の柄から、この人物は当時の老中水野忠邦を示している、との憶測が広まり、「判じ絵」として江戸中の評判を呼んだとされています。

    しかし国芳がどのような意図でこの作品を描いたのか、本意は謎に満ちています。

    画題をめぐる考察だけでなく、描かれる妖怪たちのユニークさ、可愛らしさも見どころであり、人気が高い一作となっております。
