    西村功
    1923（大正12）年10月26日、大阪市南森町に生まれる。
    3歳の時に病気で聴覚を失い、大阪府立聾口話学校に進む。
    中之島洋画研究所に学んだ後、帝国美術学校を1948（昭和23）年に卒業。
    50年第4回二紀展に「女学生」が初入選、佳作賞を受賞し、
    51年に同人、56年には委員に推挙される。
    50年代はじめに赤帽を題材にしたことを契機に、
    駅や駅員、時計、乗客、プラットホームなどを描いた。
    モチーフを大きくとらえた画面は、
    複雑に塗り重ねられる一方で時に縦横に引掻く線も用いられ、
    喧噪の中の一瞬を静謐に描き出している。
    70年に初渡欧の後たびたび渡欧し、
    パリの街景やメトロ、行き交う人びとにも題材を広げた。
    65年に「ベンチの人びと」で第9回安井賞を受賞。
    86年第40回二紀展には「シテ駅界隈」を出品、総理大臣賞を受賞している。
    82年神戸市文化賞、
    88年兵庫県文化賞受賞。
    2003年 逝去。
