    萩生田文太郎（はぎゅうだぶんたろう）　
    明治6年1873年北海道生まれ　明治33年に東京美術大学を卒業。同期に中澤弘光、矢崎千代治がいる。
    その後、明治美術会、太平洋画会と移り、写真家として、写真も発表している。

    没年不詳。

    油彩作品は、アーティゾン美術館に（石橋家より寄贈）『湖』、東京芸大に、『女半身』、個人蔵で『雨中の桜』、天心記念五浦美術館にデッサンと、調べたところ、この4点しかない。そして、今回の作品である。

    （写真作品は、東京国立近代美術館に収蔵されている。）

    静岡県立美術館で開催された『もうひとつの明治美術展』や府中市立美術館で10周年記念開催された『バジルゾンからの贈りもの』展にて、『雨中の桜』は明治美術の自然主義絵画の到達点を示す名品として紹介されている。

    本作品は、白馬会系の作品と一瞬思われるが、この時代の油彩画家としての写実の確かさと、明治美術会からの白馬会へと人気が移行する流れの心の動きを表したとも思えるような作品ではないかと思っている。明治時代に、現在の長野県立美術館のある所で開催されたイベントで、萩生田の3点の絵画が展示されたことがある。長野県に取ってもゆかりのある作家。

    そういう意味では、作者がさらに写真に興味を持って行くのも理解できる作品だと思う。

    市場に出ることはまずはないと思われる作品を明治美術を理解出来るコレクターに持って欲しい。
