    近代日本画の巨匠として知られる横山大観。なかでも富士山を題材にした、数々の名画が有名です。他の画家も描いたにもかかわらず、「大観と言えば富士」と言われるほどで、今なお人気が続いています。
    大観は明治、大正、昭和と激動の時代を生き、近代日本画の発展に一生を捧げました。誰もが認める日本を代表する画家ですが、絵の世界に入ったのは、20歳からと遅いスタートだったことは、あまり知られていません。また、輝かしい栄光を掴むまでは、苦難の連続でした。

    生涯描き続けた富士の絵

    明治から大正へと元号が変わる頃には大観の芸術も、広く認められるようになっていきます。そして朦朧体から飛躍した色彩感覚溢れた作品は、時代のムードと合い、世間の関心を集め出します。大観は「春、夏、秋、冬ばかりでない、朝、昼、夜とまた自ら異なっている」と、様々な表情を見せる富士の絵を、精力的に描き始めます。生涯に描いた富士の絵は、1500点。亡くなる直前に仕上げた作品も、富士でした。
