    玉堂は画家であると同時に生まれついての詩人であった。

    俳句、和歌、連歌などを良くしたが、短句に万感をこめる俳句に最も優れていた。

    幼い頃、父親と一緒に河原でお弁当を食べたり、山登りして
    遠景を眺めやったりしたのが、何よりの楽しみだったという。

    技法的には、墨と色彩、鋭い狩野派的線と四条派的な
    柔らかい線の総合で、雑木林の向こうからふと現れた馬子が玉堂その人にも思える。

    そして構図は斜に主題を寄せて、宋の馬遠の『辺角の景』に則っている。

    若い頃学んだ制作の姿勢を見事に生かしているといえよう。

    宋画は岡倉天心以来の日本画の目標であった。

    そしてそこには視覚では捉えられない、爽やかな空気までが流れている。

    の追従を許さぬ世界といえよう。
