    作家略歴

    パリに生まれる。1944年国立美術学校に入学するが、母が亡くなり中退。
    1947年のサロン・デ・ザンデパンダン（無鑑査自由出品の展覧会）に出品した風景画と静物画が注目を集め、
    1948年に批評家賞を受賞。
    暗い色調の画面の中にひっかくような鋭い直線を重ねる手法を確立し、
    第二次世界大戦後の荒廃した時代の空気をとらえた新しい具象絵画として高く評価された。
    1948年から銅版画、1952年から石版画を始め、ロートレアモン『マルドロールの歌』の挿画など多くの版画作品を制作。
    日本では、1953年毎日新聞社主催の「第2回日本国際美術展」で初めて作品が紹介され、
    1959年神奈川県立近代美術館で版画と素描による「ビュッフェ展」、
    1963年には国立近代美術館で代表作を集めた「ビュッフェ展　その芸術の全貌」が開催された。
