    池上彰氏、宮崎駿氏も愛読 「君たちはどう生きるか」がマンガ化された理由
    知的好奇心旺盛な少年「コペル君」と、彼を亡き父親の代わりに見守る教養ある「おじさん」。そんなふたりの心温まるやりとりを通じて、生きる意味を平易に、深く説いた児童向け教養小説の古典が初めてマンガ化された。刊行直後から話題を呼び、現在も途切れなく部数を伸ばしている。
    「原著は幼いころからの愛読書で、池上彰さんや宮崎駿さんといった錚々たる方々に愛されていることも知っていました。ですが企画の直接のきっかけは、身近にいた20代や30代の若い編集者にも愛読されていたからなんです。世代を超えて読み継がれている良書をマンガ化すれば、より広い読者に届くのではないかと考えたんですね」(担当編集者)
    原作に「ノート」として挟まれるおじさんからコペル君への助言は、あえてマンガ化せず、テキストとして掲載。〈ものの見方について〉〈真実の経験について〉〈人間の悩みと、過ちと、偉大さとについて〉といった深遠なテーマについて、原作同様、読者自身に自分の頭で考えさせる本として仕立てられている。
    「原作はコペル君の成長が主題ですが、マンガではおじさんもコペル君を導きながら一緒に成長していくような要素を加えました。工夫が功を奏してか、若い方はもちろんのこと、ご年配の方もおじさんの目線に自分を重ねて本書を楽しんでくださっている手応えがありますね」(担当編集者)

    雑誌『世界』初代編集長。岩波少年文庫の創設にも尽力。


    羽賀翔一
    漫画家。2010年『インチキ君』で第27回MANGA OPEN奨励賞受賞。
    2011年にモーニングで『ケシゴムライフ』連載、2014年に単行本発売。近刊に『昼間のパパは光っている』
