    アメリカ人フォトグラファー、チャド・ムーア（Chad Moore）の作品集。本書タイトル「Bridge of Sighs」はニューヨークにある作家のスタジオに隣接する刑務所とニューヨーク郡裁判所をつなぐかけ橋の通称であり、その名は16世紀にイタリア・ヴェネチアのドゥカーレ宮殿の尋問室から独房へと渡された架け橋に由来する。収監や刑の執行を前にした囚人たちは、このかけ橋を渡る際に最期に目にする俗世界のとして、眼前に広がるヴェネチアの美しい景色に思わずため息をつくことから「Bridge of Sighs（ため息橋）」と呼ばれるようになったという。今作では、作者の作品を特徴づけるポートレートに加え、風景写真も多く収録され、これまでの作品には見られなかった静けさや深い思量が作品全体に漂う。都市の喧騒のなかで、作家本人や被写体たちが出くわす気まぐれなできごとや体験が、どこか絶望や落胆を帯びた深い表現となって色濃く映し出される。あるいは、橋を渡る囚人たちのように、夢と美に溢れる若さへのため息なのだろうか。後年、ヴェネチアのため息橋は、橋をくぐる恋人たちに永遠の愛と祝福をもたらすとし、人々に語り継がれることになる一方で、本作はそんな説話の域を容易くも超える。作者が何よりも心を傾けるものは、歓びや情熱、退屈さや悲哀、慈愛、親密さといったひとの生温かいところにある。その混沌とした脈絡こそが、作家の自身に内在する感情や情動の表現へと導く。そして、永久に愛を探求しつづけることに、失われたイノセンスへの解を見いだす。（twelvebooks）
