    【略歴】
    1912年　佐賀県生まれ。岡田三郎助に師事。本郷絵画研究所で洋画を学ぶ。
    1939年　朝日新聞挿絵コンクールにて一等賞受賞
    1938年 「創紀美術協会」、1939年「美術文化協会」の結成に参加するなど、前衛画家として活躍。
    終戦を迎え、ファシズムの弾圧から解放されると「アヴァンギャルド美術家クラブ」を結成し、岡本太郎や福沢一郎らと共に、画壇に新しい息吹を吹き込んだ。
    懸賞小説「桜の園」の挿絵や、1966年「千夜一夜物語」や「カザノヴァ回想録」の挿絵でも知られた。
    1975年　山形県河口湖畔に古沢岩美美術館開館
    1994年　鳥栖市市民栄誉賞受賞
    未だにその人気は衰えず、各地で回顧展などが開催される。
    作品は、東京国立近代美術館、佐賀県立美術館、北九州立美術館などに所蔵。
