    九谷焼は江戸時代前期1655年頃、大聖寺初代藩主で茶人でもあった前田利治が領内の九谷（現在の加賀市山中温泉九谷町）の鉱山で磁器の原料となる陶石が発見されたことに着目。藩の命により、有田で陶技を学んだ後藤才治郎が陶石の産地となった九谷村で開窯したことから「九谷焼」と呼ばれることとなった。
    しかし、それから数十年後の1700年代の初頭、生産が終了してしまうが、その当時の記録はなく、現在もその原因は謎として残されている。この間に焼かれたものは、のちに、古九谷（こくたに）と呼ばれ、緑の色絵の具を印象的に配色して絵付けされたスタイルの「青手」や、「九谷五彩」と呼ばれる、緑・黄・紫・紺青・赤の色絵の具を自在に活用した絵付け技法「色絵（五彩手）」とともに、現代に名作として残されている。
    それから約100年。江戸時代後期に金沢や小松、発祥の地大聖寺藩内の九谷や山代などで、磁器生産が再開された。
    加賀市にある須田菁華窯は、初代・須田菁華（すだせいか）が1891年に築いた九谷焼の名窯。1915年にはあの北大路魯山人も訪れ、初代菁華から陶芸の手ほどきを受け、作陶の魅力を開眼させたきっかけになったといわれている。
