    銘　相州鎌倉住圀秀作
    　　安政六己末歳仲冬

    相州の幕末の名工で新々刀期「相州圀秀」の脇差です。坂本竜馬の愛刀としても有名な刀匠で、
    刀剣会の重鎮である柴田光男氏の鑑定書付きです。

    状態は細かい刃こぼれや多少の薄錆跡はありますが、ハギレや深い錆はありません。
    初茎の在銘品でしっかりと裏年期もあり、板目肌が凄まじい出来で、小乱れの刃紋が素晴らしい
    です。

    相州鎌倉住圀秀　　相模国　新々刀期　江戸時代後期　坂本竜馬の愛刀

    国秀は、中山一貫斎義弘の門人にして、圓龍子と号す。初め、天保頃には上野国安中藩（現：群
    馬県安中市）の板倉家の抱え工として作刀し、その頃の銘文は「上州安中住円竜子立花国秀」
    「橘円龍子国秀造」などと銘す。
    のちに、相模国鎌倉に移り、嘉永、安政、文久などの年紀作がみられ、「相州鎌倉住国秀作」
    「相州鎌倉住橘国秀作」などと銘す。
    弟子に、師：一貫斎義弘の孫で、水戸の長島義勝の子である立花円竜氏義秀がいる。師から孫の
    育成を任されたのは、国秀の技倆を余程に高く評価し、信頼されていたためであろうか。

    　作風は、師の一貫斎義弘と同様に所謂、新々刀期にまま経眼される「肌物」と呼ばれるもので、
    越中則重に私淑したとおもわれる大板目に大杢を頻りに交え、地沸が厚くつき、地景が太く入っ
    た鍛えに、のたれに互の目を交えたもの、皆焼風に沸づいた相州伝がみられ、他に小乱れ出来の
    ものなどがある。
    「肌物」は他工では、次郎太郎直勝、会津十一代兼定、水戸烈公などにも見受けられる。

    尚、幕末の坂本龍馬が陸奥守吉行を佩刀としていたことはあまりに有名な話であるが、他に嘉永
    6年、江戸の北辰一刀流千葉定吉道場に入門し、その修行が終わる頃に注文した「相州鎌倉住国秀」
    「嘉永七歳八月日」の銘文のある刃長：二尺六寸六分 (80.6cm)の刀が現存している。
    この刀は、のちに土佐勤王党の同志、弘瀬健太の刀と交換している。
    坂本竜馬の愛刀として、有名な刀工である
