    ボタニカルアートは、ボタニーとアートとを合わせたことばの意味からも知 れるように、「植物学的美術」とも「科学的な植物画」とも訳すことができる。 植物学的にみて正しく、しかもなお美しいもの、それがボタニカルアートであるといえるだろう。 ・「自然の植物は美しい」とよくいわれる。そういわれる理由は、それぞれに個 有の規則性・配列があるからである。その個有の特質を忠実に写しとることができれば、画は自から美しさをたたえたものとなるだろう。いわゆる“花の絵。 との違いは、印象にかたむくことなしに、終始ありのままに描くことから生じる。 植物と人間との長い関わりのなかで、時代により、地域により、携わる人び との解釈が異ることによっても、多種多様の植物画が残されてきた。それらはすべて、先人が築いてきた大きな遺産であることにかわりはない。

    この本は、植物がもつそれぞれの特質を、正確に把握しようとする人たちの ためのすぐれた資料となるとともに、ボタニカルアートを描こうとする人たち のためには、最良のテキストとなるだろう。それがボタニカルアートを描いて きた人たちの立場だからである。
