    19 世紀後半、日本美術が西欧に与えた影響「ジャポニスム」が、西 欧モードにおいても重要な変化の要因をもたらしたことを初めて検 証した展覧会。 19 世紀後半、西欧各地で開催された万国博覧会を通じて、＜キモノ ＞は女性たちの憧れとなり、1890 年代のリヨンのテキスタイルには、 日本の意匠が頻繁に登場しました。20 世紀初め、モードが現代の開 放的なものへと脱皮しようとしたとき、＜キモノ＞はポール・ポワ レらが率いるパリのモードにそのシンプルな形とゆとりという点で、 大きな影響を与えました。1920 年代、マドレーヌ・ヴィオネは、着 物の平面性という構造の特質を西欧モードに取り込みました。この ような歴史的な過程を経て「ジャポニスム」は西欧モードの根底に まで影響を与えることになったのです。さらに 1970 年代以降は、 日本のデザイナーの独自性に富むあらたな表現が世界で高い評価を 受けています。「モードのジャポニスム」の展開を世界で初めて歴史 的に検証した同展は、パリ、ロサンジェルス、ニューヨーク等でも 開催され大きな反響を呼びました。
