    きめが細かく、美しい色合いのマベパールピアスです。

    マベパールの母貝であるマベの学名は「プテリア・ペンギン（Pteria penguin）」といい、プテリアはギリシャ語で「翼」を意味しますから、学名は「ペンギン鳥の翼」という意味になります。これは、マベを広げた形がペンギンが翼を広げた形に似ていることから名付けられています。なお、「マベ」は、沖縄の方言で「貝」そのものを意味するとも言われていますが、定かではありません。

    マベは、国内の真珠貝の中では一番大きく、熱帯から亜熱帯、日本では主に奄美大島から沖縄にかけて生息しています。生息している場所は潮流の速い水道部で、岬付近の岩礁やサンゴに付着して生息しています。生息数が少なく、また漁師でもなかなか辿り着けない潮流が速い場所に生息しているため、天然貝を採取することが非常に難しく、その希少性から「幻のパール」と呼ばれていました。

    マベパールの大きな特長は、真珠が半円であることです。マベは激しい潮流の中で生息しているため、その体は非常に強い筋肉質にできています。そのため、核を包み込む組織のゆとりがなく、核を入れても体外にすぐに吐き出してしまいますので、核を貝殻の内側に接着させ体外に吐き出されないようにして養殖します。したがって、真珠はその接着面によって半形になります。
    しかし、何と言ってもマベパールの最大の魅力は、その輝きの美しさです。
