    1914～2012
    福岡県出身。幼少の頃より画に興味を持ちゴッホ「ひまわり」を見て感化、画家になると決意。33年には上京し日本美術学校にて本格的に画技の修得に務め卒業後は40年に第27回二科展にて初入選。46年に二科賞受賞など二科展を中心に出品し50年に会員に推挙。60年には渡仏、帰国後は68年に総理大臣賞。71年に東郷青児賞と二科展の名賞を次々に受賞し二科展のみならず現代洋画家として地位を築く。近年では95年に画業50年に対し日本芸術院賞を受賞し同会員に就任。2003年にフランス文化勲章を受章している。作品は女性・少女を主に描き渡仏時はパリの女性。帰国後は東京の女性を共に創造的な詩的空間に存在させ都会的な哀愁とアンニュイを表現しその画風は長男の織田広比古にも受け継がれている。また1950年の二科会会員就任以降、出品作には大作を製作し大作主義の画家として知られる。
