    作家説明■清水刀根 1905-1984、群馬県前橋市に生まれる。本名、刀根男。大正13(1924)年、日本美術学校洋画科を卒業。同15(1926)年第13回二科展に「卓上静物」で初入選。
    以後同会に出品を続ける。昭和6(1931)年第18回二科展に「化粧する三人の女」「二人」「黒服の女」「静物」を出品し、二科賞を受け、翌年同会会友となる。
    一方、同5年、太平洋画会会員となるが、同10年退会。同9年、前橋に絵画研究所を開く。同18年、二科会会員となる。戦後、会の再編に参加。同25年5月、群馬大学教授
    となり、同45年停年退職するまで長く後進の指導に尽くした。同36年第46回二科会に「街」「牛と子供」を出品して会員努力賞を受賞。同54年、同会理事となった。
    初期には忠実な写生にもとづく人物像を多く描いたが、戦後マチス風の画風を経て、直線を多用した形態把握と幾何学的に整理された緊密な構図に至った。
    二科会理事、元群馬大学教授の洋画家。
