    ・作家略歴
    1904年青森県生まれ。ロシア未来派やダダイズムに影響を受け、1933年東郷青児や古賀春江らが主宰した「アヴァンガルド洋画研究所」に入所。1938年吉原治良や山口長男らと「九室会」、1939年福沢一郎らと「美術文化協会」を創立。1957年第4回日本国際美術展K氏賞、1959年第5回日本国際美術展国立近代美術館賞、1961年第6回サンパウロ・ビエンナーレ国際絵画賞、グッケンハイム国際美術展優秀賞など数多くの賞を受賞。各国の画廊から個展や作品購入の申込みが殺到し、日本の戦後美術を代表する作家の一人となる。代表作である電動ドリルを使って支持体に点や線の痕跡を残した60年代の作品「ドリル」シリーズ、合板の重なりが奥行きを見せる平面とも立体ともつかないような作品「トロウッド」シリーズ、黒の板をボルトで連結させた「複合体」シリーズなど絵画と彫刻の垣根を超えた前衛的な表現を展開した。また後進の指導にも尽力し、1964年多摩美術大学の教授に就任。斎藤義重教室からは関根伸夫、吉田克朗、成田克彦、小清水漸、菅木志雄ら「もの派」の美術家を輩出した。2001年6月逝去。
