    At the heart of the current revival of classical themes in interior design we find Empire, the rich, elegant style of Napoleon’s era.
    From its birth in France to its Biedermeier incarnation in Germany, its echoes in Regency and its manifestations 
    in English, Russian and American version, Empire has left a wonderful legacy of objects and themes.
    Here are massive couches with scrolled arms and claw feet, cabinets with symmetrical silhouettes and blocklike
    bases, and marble-topped commodes.
    And here are Empire’s lighter themes: swans, dolphins, winged sphinxes, chimerae with heads of eagles, and
    whimsical half-man half-beast forms that act as columns and supports for the furniture.
    Yet the lines of the pieces themselves are clear-cut and simple.
