    伝説のワーグナー歌手・メルヒオールは、重量級テノールであったことやワーグナー作品の中でもヒロイックな役回りが多かったため、アメリカ的な大味の歌い手との印象があります。
    しかし《タンホイザー》のような懊悩する心理の機微を表現するすることにも長けていて、
    相手役に名コンビのフラグスタートを得た本《タンホイザー》では、メルヒオールのいっぽうの美点が充分に発揮されています。
    モノラルのライヴですが、録音年月日の古さを感じさせない良い音質。
    スケールの大きな堂々たる演奏です。
