    メルヒオールはワーグナー作品の中でもひときわヒーローが颯爽と活躍する「ローエングリン」を、何度も演奏しており、録音も４種類も残しています。
    第二次世界大戦前というきな臭い時代の中で、アメリカの民衆の求める絶好のヒーロー像を体体現していたともいえます。
    とりわけレートベルクやトルボルク（トールボリ）という際だったヒロインとの共演で知られるのがこの録音であり、
    ワーグナー史上重要な足跡を残したメルヒオールの無尽蔵に湧き出てくるかのような輝かしい歌唱を聴くことが出来ます。
    ミュンシュの後を受けてボストン交響楽団の指揮者となったラインスドルフは、当時のメトの常任指揮者的存在であり、
    ＲＣＡへのスタジオ録音をはじめ『ローエングリン』は、ことのほか重要なレパートリーでした。
    現在ではメルヒオールとの43年ＭＥＴでの放送録音も入手しやすくなっていおり、聴き比べも一興です。
