    本書は、ポール・ヘニングセン（Poul Henningsen1894-1967）によるランプ開発の物語です。
    1926年、3シェードPHランプ開発を皮切りに、２つ世界大戦を間にした最も実りの多い時代に焦点を当てています。また、電灯をデザインが制御するPHランプの誕生はヘニングセンにとっての第一歩であったとともに、デンマークデザイン、現代照明デザインの第一歩でもあったのと言えます。

    PHランプの始まりは、1925年にパリ万国博覧会に出品した「パリ・ランプ」金賞の獲得です。このパリ・ランプを共同開発した照明ブランド“ルイス・ポールセン”と翌年1926年に正式契約し、ヘニングセンが亡くなる1967年までそのコラボレーションは続きました。

    ヘニングセンの執筆活動は、政治、演劇、音楽など、その守備範囲は広範ですが、PHランプとその照明デザイン理論に関する文章は散発的な形でしか残されていません。掲載されているランプの図面等はデンマーク王立芸術アカデミー建築学校（Kunstakademiets Arkiektskole）の照明研究所にて永年研究されてきたものです。

    また本書は、当時のPHランプの写真を品番ごと多数掲載しており、今日においてはヴィンテージ品のレファレンスとしても重宝することと思われます。
