    1920年代、アメリカでは反日感情が高まりをみせており、日本人移民を排斥する「新移民法」が可決された。そのような状況を憂慮した親日家の宗教教育者・ギューリック博士は、「人形」を通じて日米親善をはかろうと考え、親交の深かった渋沢栄一に協力を求めた。

    その試みは1927年（昭和2年）に実を結び、アメリカから約12,000体の「青い目の人形」が贈られ、その返礼として、日本の子どもたちの献金によって約60体の「答礼人形」が海を渡った。

    日米開戦によって、敵国からの「贈り物」として多くが廃棄処分を受けたが、捨てるに忍びないと密かに保存された人形たちが戦火をくぐり抜け、1980年代時点で「青い目の人形」216体、「答礼人形」25体が健在であることが確認されている。

    本書は、19体の「答礼人形」が里帰りし、日本に現存する「青い目の人形」を加え、1988年に日本全国で開かれた展覧会の図録。

    写真6と7番目に値札シールを剥がした跡と、8番目の写真に有るように小口に小さなシミヨゴレがあります。それ以外（本文部分）は古本として総じて良好な状態です。
