    原題は『GAIA: A new look at life on Earth』。ガイア仮説からガイア理論に発展した思想の原典である。この仮説の出発点は、「大気をはじめとする地球のさまざまな無機特性を観察することから始まっている」
    1970年代、NASAによる火星探査に先立つ地上調査が行われ、著者らが火星と地球ではその大気組成に大きな違いがあることを発見した。そして導き出されたのが、地球の大気組成はきわめて不思議な非平衡状態にあり、地球を総体としてその平衡状態を自動調節する機能（サイバネテックス）を持っている有機体、つまり巨大な一個の生命体とみなす、という大胆な仮説であった。

    原著発刊当時、ガイア仮説はほとんど無視された。リン・マーギュリスとカール・セーガンを除いて。しかし、後にオートポイエーシスや自己組織化の地球生成などとともに認められるようになった。

    太古の苛酷な地球環境（太陽はまだ弱々しく、強烈な放射線にさらされ、遊離酸素がほとんど存在しない状態）から生命の旅が始まったという。ラヴロックは努めて悲観的になり過ぎないよう、科学的洞察力と平常心をもって仮説を説こうとしている。たとえばレイチェル・カールソンの悲観論にやんわりと反意を表すというように。彼の視点は、今日のエコロジストの心情からすればあまりにも楽観的に思えるかもしれない。第7章「ガイアと人間― 汚染問題」の末尾で、「唯一の汚染― それは人間なり」と言っているのは彼の本心でもあり、人間中心主義に対して唯一見せたシニシズムでもあろう。

    また、この訳者による翻訳は全般的にわかりやすく良質である。しかし、“訳者後記にかえて”は翻訳者の立場を越えて自己主張しすぎであり、読むに耐えない。また、そこに書かれている内容は一部明らかにナイーブすぎる。本文中にも訳注と称して妙な疑問や間の手を差し込んでいるのは笑止なだけでなく、著者に対して不誠実であり、同時に編集者の良識を疑うものである。（澤田哲生）
