田中さんは有田工高校図案科（現デザイン科）卒。専門学校を経て東京のガラスメーカーに入社し、１９７０年代にはガラスを用いた和食器の開発に打ち込んだ。
代表作は「あわ雪」シリーズ。透明なガラスに大小無数の泡を吹き込んだ作品はガラス和食器の先駆けとなった。
オブジェでは成田空港のインフォメーションランプなど手掛けている。
