    【テーミス】
    ギリシア神話の法・掟の女神。
    ヘーシオドスによれば、ウーラノス（天）とガイア（大地）の娘で、ティーターンの一柱。
    テーミスとは古代ギリシア語で「不変なる掟」の意味であり、掟の擬人化である。

    古代ギリシア語において正義に該当する神は、テーミスではなくディケー女神である。
    ギリシア神話においては、ティーターンとオリュンポス神の戦いの後、敗れたティーターンは主要な神の地位を失い、神話においても多くの神が言及されなくなり、また地位が低下した。
    オリュンポスの時代になって、なおその地位と威勢を変わりなく維持した神はテーミスだけである。

    目隠しは彼女が前に立つ者の顔を見ないことを示し、法は貧富や権力の有無に関わらず、万人に等しく適用されるという「法の下の平等」の法理念を表す。
    これはよく知られたことだが、天秤と剣については諸説ある。
    中でも面白い説は、「テーミスと同一視されることもあるアストライアーは星座上でおとめ座に属するため、隣りのてんびん座の天秤を借りている」というもの。

    では剣は誰から借りたのだろうか。
