    …会長は心よく、数回の長時間のインタビューに応じてくださった。私の知らなかった事実が、またどこにも公表されていない半生の生活行動が、つぎつぎと会長の口からとび出してくる。私の用意した大学ノートは、たちまちのうちに、会長のはじめて明らかにされた記録で埋まっていった。

    それは意外なエピソード、意表をつく行動の連続であった。これをいったどのように整理し、書きあげればよいのか。

    私は、児童文学での伝記、成人文学としての伝記も数多く手がけてきた。しかし数十年にわたる私の長い文筆生活のあいだで、今度の池田会長の伝記ほど苦労したことはない。そして、約一ヵ年をついやして、やっと脱稿することができたのだ。

    本書は、もちろんどなたにもぜひ読んでほしいが、混迷した現代になにかをつかもうとしている若い人たちに、私はとくに読んでもらいたいと思う。
