    Item Description

    九谷庄三は、文化13年（1816）、能美郡寺井村（現、能美市寺井町）の農業茶屋の子として生まれました。幼名は庄七といい、庄三と改めたのは嘉永年間（1848ー1854）頃で、九谷姓を名のるようになったのは明治に入ってからといわれます。
    　庄三は、再興九谷の諸窯からの招きを受け、陶工として手腕を発揮しましたが、自ら窯元とならず、若くして着画を専業とする工房と錦窯を寺井村に開きました。その理由は、すでに肥前や瀬戸では素地作りと着画のそれぞれの専業化が大量の需要に対応できる生産方式として普及していることを知り、当時、加賀の他の地域に先駆けて能美で始まっていた分業化の時流に乗ったと考えられます。
    　この方式は斉田伊三郎（道開）によっても行われ、隣の佐野村にも波及し、能美九谷の飛躍にとって大きな原動力となりました。
    　明治期に入り、着画を専業とする庄三の工房はますます多くの陶工を抱える工房となり、素地を大量生産する本窯と協業して、九谷焼による殖産興業を推進させました。庄三は実業家としてもその役割を大いに果たし、産業工芸としての九谷焼の産業基盤を築くことに大きく貢献しました。
    　工房の作品は「庄三風」の精緻な上絵付が施され、明治九谷の中核をなすものとなりました。それらは貿易商人によって大量に輸出され、明治期の我が国貿易品として海外で大変好まれ、あわせて国内でも販路を拡げました。
