    録音状態にめぐまれているとはいえないケンペの《指環》諸作の中でも傑出した音質で、全曲盤を待望させてきた名盤です。
    ゴールデンメロドラム盤と比肩する良好な音質で、モノラルといえど空間の広がり、迫力には素晴らしいものがあります。  
        
     1961年のバイロイトでは、ヴォルフガング・ワーグナーの演出による『ニーベルングの指環』が話題を集めていました。戦後バイロイトの『指環』上演といえば、1951年から1958年まで兄ヴィーラント・ワーグナーの演出が一貫して用いられており、クナッパーツブッシュ、カイルベルト、クラウス、カラヤンの指揮によって錚々たる演奏がおこなわれていました。
     そして当『ワルキューレ』は、1959年の『指環』無しの年を経て、1960年に華々しく導入された新演出の指揮をルドルフ・ケンペが受け持った第２年目『指環』のもので、1963年までの計4年間にわたって継続されることとなった組み合わせによるものです。
    当時のケンペは、コヴェントガーデン王立歌劇場で大きな成功を収めており、特に1957年の『ニーベルングの指環』は見事なできばえとして高い評価を受けていました。
     1961年のモノラル録音ですが、歌手たちが生き生きとしたケンペならではの上演を隅々までつぶさに味わうことが可能です。オーケストラの扱いが巧みなのも特筆もので、ライトモティーフなど性格的な動機を雄弁に響かせる仕上げのうまさは、すでにさまざまなオペラに通じていたケンペの実力を如実に示すものとなっています。
