    1910年、オランダのアムステルダムに生まれる。イタリアで広告関係の仕事をした後、1939年に渡米。絵本作家として、また国際的なデザイナーとしても有名。

    冬に備えてせっせと食料を集めて働く野ネズミたち。
    でも、フレデリックだけはじっとして動こうとしません。
    寒くて暗い冬の日のために「おひさまのひかり」を、
    灰色の冬のために「いろ」を、
    長い冬の間に話が尽きないように「ことば」を集めているんだ、と言うフレデリック。
    やがて冬が来て、食料も尽きた頃、
    フレデリックが集めておいたものは尽きることなく
    みんなに楽しい時をもたらしてくれていました。
    長い冬、野ねずみたたちを救ったのはフレデリックだったのです。

    みんな同じでなくていい。
    それぞれの役割や存在には様々なカタチがある。
    そんなことを教えてくれる1匹のねずみが主人公のお話です。
