    インドネシア・西ティモールの王様が祭儀に使用していた迫力の大型木彫仮面　
    インドネシアの東部、小スンダ列島の東の端。そこにティモール島はあります。ティモール島の東半分は、21世紀初の独立国である東ティモール。そして西側半分がインドネシアのNTT（東ヌサトゥンガラ）州に属しています。写真の仮面の生まれ故郷です。所有者は首都ジャカルタやバリ島で最も有名なアンティーク店舗を経営するダルマ・ムリア社。同社のイルワン氏の説明によれば、この仮面は、西ティモールにかつて君臨した何人かの王様（ラジャ）の一人が所有していたもので、儀式に使用されていたそうです。表側と裏側のなんと格差のあることか。表は、すべすべした彫りで、頭部に二匹のトカゲ。凄まじい形相ですが、なんともコミカルな表情を見せています。一方、裏面はゴツゴツとした岩のような姿。素材の樹木が持ち合わせた筋やコブといった特性を、上手に利用して削り上げたようです。まるで生きているかのような印象さえ与えます。顔面の中央部が、木の元もとの形状のため、へこんでいます。このため見る角度によって、異なった表情を見せます。西ティモールは多くの木製プリミティブ・アートを生み出した地域ですが、この仮面のような大型マスクは極めて稀な存在です。その意味で貴重な逸品と言えるでしょう。サイズは、高さが41cm、最大幅が28cm、平均的な厚みが約3cm、重量2.1kg。送料は当方で負担いたします。
