    インドネシア・小スンダ列島レティ島の祖先像（博物館レベル） 国際的リゾート地として不動の名声を誇るバリ島。小スンダ列島は、そこから真東へ伸びている。ロンボク島、スンバワ島、スンバ島、フローレス島、そしてティモール島。大きいと言える島々はそこでプツンと切れる。近く独立する予定の東ティモールの北側には、それでも大きな地図ならば記載されているウェタール島が横たわる。実は、そこからさらに東のタニンバル諸島に至るまでの途中に、たくさんの島があるのです。旅行者もそこまでは足を運びません。交通手段が極めて貧弱であること、それも小型船舶に頼らざるを得ない点が最大要因でしょう。しかし、外部の人間が訪れることが極めて稀な、それらの島々の中には、世界中のプリミティブ・アート（原始美術）コレクターが憧れる島があるのです。コレクターの中でも、西部ニューギニアのアスマット彫刻や、カリマンタン（ボルネオ）島の木彫などを大方収集し終えた者だけが、最後にたどり着く地点といっても過言ではないでしょう。それがレティ(Leti)島です。その島でどのような生活が営まれ、どのような自然環境があるのか、知ろうと思っても絶望的です。全くといっていいほど情報がないのです。しかし、その島は、欧米のプリミティブ・アート愛好家らの間で“幻の島”と呼称されるまでに、小規模ながら実に素晴らしい木彫刻文化が存在しているのです。 インドネシア文化宮もレティ島のアート収集に全力をあげていますが、一年に一度程度国際オークションに登場するレティ島産の祖先像は、簡単に手出しができるような価格ではありません。一方、国際観光リゾート地バリ島や首都ジャカルタの原始美術市場に、レティ島の物が並ぶことも数年に一度程度です。そうした中でようやく手に入れたものが写真の祖先像です。男性像です。レティ彫刻文化の特徴が見事に残っている逸品です。蹲踞姿勢で、かつ腕を組み、両膝に掌を置くスタイル。これこそまさにレティ原始美術の最大の特徴です。推定で70-80年前の製作と思われるこの祖先像は、レティの熱帯多雨気候の影響をまともに受けたのでしょうか、所々に虫食いや自然剥離の跡が残っています。また左の二の腕部分に亀裂が入っています。しかしながら、その朽ち方はそのままこの祖先像の魅力ともなっています。何よりも、これほど古いレティ島の木彫が存在することだけでも驚異的と言うべきでしょう。博物館クラスであることは論を待ちません。 サイズは、高さが約31cm（台座の高さはおよそ8cm）、最大横幅が8cm、最大奥行きが9cmです。重さはおよそ690グラム。 インドネシア文化宮GBI=Graha Budaya Indonesia）は、インドネシアの24時間ニューステレビ局『メトロTV』東京支局がプロデュースするインドネシア情報発信基地です。
