アジア・オセアニ地域を代表する、世界的なプリミティブ・アートの最高峰。インドネシアの最東端に位置するパプア州（旧イリアンジャヤ州・西部ニューギニア）南西部のアスマット(Asmat)地方で製作される彫刻は、ニューヨークのメトロポリンタン美術館にアスマット特別コーナーが特設されるように、グローバルな評価を得ています。日本ではまだまだ馴染みのない「Primitive Arts」も、欧米のコレクターの間では、彫刻オブジェの最後の一品として『いつかはアスマット彫刻を手に入れたい』と言われるまでに高い人気を誇っています。インドネシア文化宮(GBI)は、アスマットの中心地アガッツ(Agats)村で開催される「アスマット芸術祭(Pesta Budaya Asmat)」の国際オークションに参加し、厳選されたハイレベルのパトゥン（彫刻像）を収集してきていますが、今回、その中から戦闘楯彫刻を中心に紹介します。
戦闘楯は、ビス・ポール（祖霊像）やサゴ椰子皿彫刻と並んで、アスマット文化を象徴する原始美術彫刻の一つです。地元のフメリピッツ（風の人）神話が伝えるように、人間を“木から生まれて木に還る”と信じているアスマット人は、広大な湿地帯のジャングルの中で樹木と共生してきました。木こそが全ての源なのです。“アスマット”とは「真実の人間」そして「我々は木だ」を意味する地元語です。移動のためのカヌー、そしてオール。住居は勿論のこと、戦闘用の楯と槍、そして調理用具と、身の回りにある全ての道具を木から生み出してきました。そしてアスマット彫刻の最大の特色が、あらゆる彫刻に刻まれている人物像です。“木に還る”という言葉通り、彫刻に彫られている人物はみな故人です。生きている人は彫刻にはなりません。なぜならば、まだ“木に還る”必要がないからです。亡き祖父、祖母、父そして母、あるいは亡き兄弟や親戚の姿を木に彫りこむことによって、故人の霊といつまでも暮らしているのです。それはまた、祖先の霊魂によって常に守られている、という宗教観にも繋がります。戦闘楯に刻まれた人物像は、部族戦争で出撃した際に、「亡き祖父や亡き父も一緒に戦ってくれている」という精神的礎（いしずえ）となります。サゴ椰子皿彫刻で言えば、「いつでも祖先と共に食事をしたい」がために、毎日使用する道具に故人の姿を彫りこみます。密林と共生しようとするアスマット人のなんともエコロジカルな生き様。アスマット彫刻は、私たちに“森を守る”ことが“人間を守る”ことであることを教えてくれます。
アスマット彫刻は、地域によって大きく四つに分類されています。アスマットの中心地であるアガッツ(Agats)村を含め、アラフラ海に面した南部のカスアリネン海岸一帯。これを通常『中央アスマット文化圏』と呼ぶます。そして、アガッツ村の北方、サワ・エルマ(Sawa/Erma)村を中心地とする一帯が、『北部アスマット文化圏』です。次いで、シレッツ(Siretsj)川中上流部一帯のセンゴ(Senggo)村を中心地とする一帯が『チタック文化圏』、さらに上流、中央高地と接する付近を流れるブラザー(Brazza)川の流域に発達した文化が『ブラザー文化圏』です。
写真の戦闘楯は、『ブラザー文化圏』のものです。サイズは、高さが約168cm、最大幅が約47cmで、重さは約4kg。1980年代に製作されたものです。
