    アスマット(Asmat)彫刻（男と女のラインダンス）
    世界的に有名なイリアンジャヤ州南西部のアスマット原始美術。その芸術性の高さは、ニューヨークにあるメトロポリタン美術館に「アスマット・コーナー」があることからも窺い知ることができる。プリミティブ・アートは、日本ではまだまだ愛好家そして理解者が少ないが、欧米諸国では、芸術品コレクターにとって『いつの日か、アスマット彫刻を手に入れたい』と、垂涎の的。写真の『男と女のラインダンス』像は、1997年10月にアスマットの中心村アガッツ(Agats)で開催された『アスマット芸術祭』の国際オークションでインドネシア文化宮(GBI)が落札したもの。作者はDomin Akat氏。アツィ(Atsy)村出身。その整然とした人物彫刻の連続は、オークション会場を大きくわかせた。腰を落とし、前の人の肩に両手を当てる。呼吸がぴったりとあったラインダンスの躍動感と集団美が見事に表現されています。男は計6名。全員が性器を出した状態の全裸です。これはかつてのアスマットではごく自然な光景でした。そして計5名の女性。合わせて11名。サッカーチームができそうですね！男と女が異なった方向を向いている姿も実にユニークです。一本の鉄木もしくはマングローブ材を削って創作した一刀彫りです。
    アスマット地方の神話である「フメリピッツ（創造主で“風の人”の意味）」に拠れば、天から地上に降りてきた創造主は、丸太をくり貫いて男女の像を彫った。次に太鼓を作った。トカゲの皮で覆って、太鼓を打ち鳴らすと、その男女の人形は立ち上がり、リズムに合わせて踊り、歌い始めた。そうして人間としてのアスマット人が誕生した、と。つまり、人間は木から生まれたという神話です。太鼓は母でもあるのです。ちなみにアスマットとは、地元の言葉で「真実の人間」、「我々は木だ」を意味します。木から生まれたと信じるアスマット人は、死ぬと身内の手で木の彫刻になります。この神話に根ざした風習によって、アスマット地方では、彫刻文化が異常に発達したわけです。しかし、木から生まれたと信じるアスマットの人々は、密林との共生を今でも続けています。“森こそわが命の源泉”と考えています。なんとエコロジカルな生き様なんでしょうか。
    サイズは台座の全長が95.5cm、幅が18-19cm。男性列の最大高が17.5cm、女性列の最大高が14.2cm。重さはおよそ5.5kg。
