    スマトラ島バタック民族の戦闘楯
    今でもそうですが、スマトラ島の北部に暮らすバタック人の男性は、気性が少し荒いことでインドネシア中に知れ渡っています。しかし、人それぞれで、バタック人の中にも、とってもおとなしく、優しいキャラクターの人もたくさんいます。バタック人は、確かにかつて好戦的であったかもしれませんが、しかし音楽と踊りを愛する民族でもあります。写真は、その昔バタック人が戦闘楯として使用していたものです。おそらく王家警備の兵士や、位の高い人物の私兵などが使っていた物と思われます。真鍮製の12角の星型模様が計7個打ち付けてあります。裏面には計4ヵ所の鉄製金具が付いています。その昔、ここに皮製もしくは木製の取っ手が付けられていたのでしょう。現状は、写真で見られるように、棕櫚で作ったかのような編みヒモが付いていますが、取っ手としての使用には耐えられません。サイズは、直径が約43cm、厚みが3.5cm、重さはおよそ1,45kg。
