    インドネシア・イリアンジャヤ・アスマット地方の頭蓋骨穿孔専用の星型石器（極希少）
    インドネシア最東端パプア（旧イリアンジャヤ）州の南西部に位置するアスマット(Asmat)地方は、世界的に有名な原始美術(Primitive Arts)の宝庫です。1930年代に欧米の宣教団が布教活動をスタートさせる以前は、まさに“石器時代”の真っ只中にありました。一方、北海道ほどの広大な湿原地帯から成るアスマット地方には、小さな石ころ一つ落ちていない、いわゆる『石のない世界』です。泥と土そして深いジャングルが支配する、厳しい自然環境。そのため、道具として、そして結納品として欠くことのできない石器は、遥か中央高地の部族との交易で手に入れてきました。また、豪雨によってなぎ倒され、上流から流れてきた倒木の根の部分に付着している石の中から、石器に適したものを探したとの報告もあります。アスマトでは、まさに石こそがダイヤモンドだったのです。 写真の星型石器は、樹木の伐採や加工に用いる通常の石器とは著しく異なり、ずばり人間の頭蓋骨に穴を開けるためだけに使用されました。頭蓋骨穿孔専用の石器です。部族戦争が頻繁に発生していた時代、敵の首を狩って村へ帰ると、勝利の宴がイョウ（男だけが入室を許される儀礼長屋）で執り行われました。敵の生首はイロリの火で“調理”されます。そして焼きあがった頭蓋骨のこめかみ部分を、この星型石器で穿孔し、その穴から脳を取り出し、まず長老らに、次いで宴の参加者に振舞われたのです。サイズは、最大径が約11.8cmと約13cm。厚みはおよそ4.3cmです。重さは約855グラム。中央に棍棒を取り付ける穴が開いています。イョウでの頭蓋骨穿孔の専用道具として使われた一方で、時には、この星型石器は、部族戦争の接近戦の場面において、敵の頭部を破壊する武器としても使用されました。石が存在しないアスマット社会で、あらゆる石器の中で、最も神聖視された石が、まさにこの星型石器だったのです。アスマット地方でも、各村に1～2個程度しか存在しない極めて神聖でかつ貴重なものでした。また、この星型石器のように、相当使い込まれたのにも関わらず、星型をかろうじて維持した状態で残っていたことは驚異的です。というのも、多くの殺戮用石器が、キリスト教宣教師の到来と共に焼き捨てられ、今日では欧米の一部の民族博物館に陳列されているのみです。送料は当方で負担いたします。 インドネシア文化宮は、インドネシアの24時間ニューステレビ局『メトロTV』東京支局がプロデュースするインドネシア情報発信基地です。
