    作品本体には正面から見る分にはシミなどの汚れは見当たりません。

    原画は1950年制作の切り紙絵。原画をもとにリトグラフで復刻された。晩年近くになって始めた切り紙の手法に魅せられたマティスは数多くの作品を残している。パリ、エディシ ョン・マーグ刊行。パリ、アルテ工房制作。

    アンリ・マティス（1869年12月31日-1954年11月3日）はフランスの画家、素描家、彫刻家。大胆な色使いや素描が特徴のフォーヴィスム（野獣派）のリーダ－的存在である。

    現在、マティスはパプロ・ピカソ、マルセル・デュシャンと並んで20世紀初頭の視覚芸術に革新的な発展を促した3大アーティストの1人として、美術的な評価を与えられている。

    線の単純化と色彩の純化によって、作者の個性や感情が伝わる表現を探求。フォーヴィスムやフランスの表現主義とも呼ばれており、近代美術（前衛美術）を切り開いた。

    初期こそフォーヴィスムを切り開いた前衛芸術家だったが、1920年代以降は古典絵画に回帰する。第二次世界大戦時のヴィシー政権下のフランスでも絵画活動を行い、並行して教会の内装デザインやグラフィックデザインでも活躍するようになった。 晩年は色紙を切り貼りした切り絵（カットアウト）で壁画レベルの巨大な作品を制作して、評価を高めた。
